4 Interesting African Culture You Should Know

With cultures and customs that span hundreds of years, Africa is home to some of the most fascinating people on the planet. You are most likely unaware of or have never heard of a few remarkable African cultures.

Cohabiting with their mothers

Children never reside with their dads in the Gio tribe of Ivory Coast. Until the kids are old enough to move out, the women of the tribe reside with their kids in their own homes, which are usually modest huts.

Uncles raise their sons

When male children in the Songo tribe in Northern Angola reach the age of five or six, they are sent to live with their mother's side uncles. This is true because matrilineal lines are how chiefs in their society inherit their titles and responsibilities.

Conserving Wild Animals

Killing wild animals is frowned upon by the Massai people of Tanzania and Kenya. They retain livestock and cattle without restriction, but they do not handle wild creatures. This is primarily because they view these wild animals as members of their clan, each clan being connected to a particular species that they frequently care for and regard as members of their own clan.

Striking the Suitor

Beating the suitor is part of the Sharo tradition practiced by the Fulani tribe in West Africa. When two men are competing for the same woman, the tradition is adhered to. The males are asked to beat themselves up in a competition for the woman's hand in marriage. This is done to determine who will eventually be her suitor. The woman can become the wife of the man who can withstand the beating with the least amount of discomfort if any at all. While some tribal members no longer follow the custom to the letter, others may not follow it as closely as they formerly did.
